Sydney has plenty of shops to choose from where you can buy various Australian souvenirs, as well as modern fashion clothing and much more. You can easily find them and spend days wandering around in these shopping centres in the city. You may have to watch out not to get lost in one of them. Late night shopping in the city is until 9.00pm on Thursday night.

You shouldn’t miss out the most beautiful shopping centre in the world how Pierre Cardin described Sydney's Queen Victoria Building (QVB). It is quite pricy but you definitely have to sit down for a coffee on one the higher level and enjoy the magnificent building and the shopping crowd below.


Sydney has quite a few famous markets where you also can make fantastic bargain. The most popular is Paddy’s Market near China Town. The plentiful stalls are open from Thursday to Sunday. You can find all kind of souvenirs here for the best price. Example, pack of 10 koala clips is $2 that you can buy at the airport for $20. Do not buy without negotiating!

The other famous market should be visited is the Rocks Market held on every weekend. It is an open tent market assembled on the George street. One of Sydney's better markets is to be found on Saturdays in Paddington in the church grounds


Surprisingly you can negotiate in almost every shop. Always ask for the “final price”. If you give a reasonable offer you have good chance to make a deal. When you buy something expensive this is a must. Well, you probably won’t buy any whitegoods but if you want to purchase any other product keep this in mind!



Watch out for the labels and buy Australian made Don’t buy aboriginal art made in China, or plastic boomerang!


If you're leaving Australia and buy goods no more than 30 days before leaving, you can claim back the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax (WET). You have to ask the retailer for tax invoice. If you spend more than $1000 then the invoice must contain your name and address. You are required to take some of the stuff with you as hand carry into the plane to show proof of export. You can’t let someone else making the claim for you and it is only available up to 30 minutes prior your flight’s departure.
